The Citizen's Committe on Drug Enforcement met in 1986 "to determine whether a serious drug problem exists in Medina County and whether locally funded drug enforcement is needed on a countywide basis and to recommend the most effective and efficient agency or method for providing drug enforcement in Medina County." Did you know that the Chairman of the Citizen's Committee on Drug Enforcement is now Medina County's current Sheriff, Neil Hassinger? After weeks of meeting with Medina County residents, school personnel, employers, law enforcement, chemical dependency counselors and parents sharing heart-breaking stories of their children, who became addicted to drugs the Committee concluded: "It is evident that a serious drug problem does indeed exist in Medina County, just as one does thoughout the United States at this time. "The Committe believes strongly that law enforcement and judicial efforts must be expanded and intensified. in addition, educational programs must be increased at all levels throughout the population and counseling services must be easily available for families and individuals faced with drug problems." It is important to understand, too, that even with the most intense drug enforcement possible in our county, drug abuse and the sale of illegal drugs will never be completely eliminated. Medina County can only try to do its best at attacking a problem that permeates society at all levels, in every community." |
